Sigarda, Host of Herons (5/5 flying with hexproof on ETB) powers my Selesnya Commander deck, built for mostly a 1v1 scenario, but still works for our weekend 4-player pod. I evolved this from its first version, which was an equipment-based deck back in 2010 or 2011 before I stopped playing MTG, then rebuilt it when I returned to the game in 2025. Only that it’s now an enchantress deck, emphasizing auras for explosive pumps, enchantress draw engines, and sacrifice protection to navigate politics. It’s tuned to win via 21 commander damage while stabilizing the board, getting the commander out by around turn 4 to 5 (turn 3 with some luck).
The Game Plan
Ramp early into enchantress payoffs, cast Sigarda on curve (often turn 4–5), then layer 3–5 auras for a 20/20+ evasive threat that lifegains through chump blocks. Midgame, use protection auras to survive wraths; late game, recur any lost auras with Mantle of the Ancients. Example sequence: Turn 3 Sythis draws into Ethereal Armor → Turn 5 Sigarda + Ancestral Mask/All That Glitters→ Swing for 15+ while gaining life and protecting from sacs.
Key Cards and Packages

Win Conditions
- All That Glitters / Ethereal Armor: Scales Sigarda to lethal size off enchantment count—core Voltron enablers, plus first strike.
- Shield of the Oversoul / Unflinching Courage: Trample, lifelink; turns her into an untouchable clock.
- Eldrazi Conscription: +7/+7 trample annihilator—detachable finisher.
- Walking Ballista, Heliod, Sun-Crowned – Alternate win con.
- Siona, Captain of the Pyleas, Concordant Crossroad – Another alternate win con.
Engine Pieces
- Sythis, Harvest’s Hand / Setessan Champion / Sram, Senior Edificer: Draw every enchantment; finds gas endlessly.
- Sanctum Weaver: Mana dorks that ramp off your theme.
Interaction
- Swords to Plowshares / Heroic Intervention: Spot removal and board protection.
- Sterling Grove: Destroys threats on your auras.
Replication
- Yenna, Redtooth Regent, Calix, Guided by Fate: Low-cost replication that can quickly turn Sigarda into a hard-hitting truck if unchecked.
Mana Base and Curve

35–37 lands (Temple Garden, Sunpetal Grove, duals/fetches like Windswept Heath), 10+ ramp (Utopia Sprawl). Curve skews low (avg. CMC 2.5–3.0 without lands) for double-spell turns.
Strengths, Weaknesses, and Ideal Tables
Strengths: Dodges most removal, gains life to beat aggro, and hates on sacrifice outlets.
Weaknesses: Vulnerable to repeated wraths/exile (e.g., Toxic Deluge) or enchant hate (Back to Nature); fast combo outraces if no early disruption.
