Marvel Darkhold Destiny Brings an Original Story to Magic

Wizards of the Coast announced the third Universes Beyond collaboration with Marvel at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2026: Magic: The Gathering x Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, releasing April 9, 2027. It is the first crossover set to tell an original story written for Magic, with a companion Marvel Comics release by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly arriving digitally in February 2027 and in print in April 2027. Preorders opened October 10, 2026 from local game stores, TCGplayer, and Amazon.

The official announcement trailer, posted on Magic: The Gathering’s YouTube channel, describes the set as “full of monsters and magic, demons and sorcerers” and calls it “the very arcane side of Marvel.” Per the trailer, Marvel was “incredibly broad in its universe” and Darkhold Destiny “takes you to places in the Marvel universe that we haven’t been yet.”

An Original Story Written for Magic

Darkhold Destiny is the first Universes Beyond set to carry a narrative created specifically for the crossover instead of adapting an established Marvel property, breaking with the property adaptations of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel Super Heroes. The set’s story includes the origin of a brand-new character, debuting in a Marvel Comics release written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly: digital in February 2027, physical in April 2027, with the card set following on April 9. Wizards describes the narrative as unfolding across nearly 30 dimensions, centered on four main characters: Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, and Dormammu, with the story journeying through the secrets of the Dark Dimension.

The world walks the “dark side of the Marvel Universe”: vampires, devils, witches, werewolves, and a gothic dread that recalls Innistrad, though the set is not itself a return to the horror plane. The Darkhold is Marvel’s answer to the Necronomicon, a tome whose lore is believed to draw on H.P. Lovecraft’s early stories.

Characters in the Arcane Corner of Marvel

Artwork in the trailer and the roughly 20 cards shown at the panel point to the mystical side of Marvel, and the first Darkhold Destiny spoilers fill in the set’s roster before the full Darkhold Destiny reveal season begins. The showcase names Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Doctor Voodoo, Dormammu, and Scarlet Witch among the featured characters, while spoiled cards confirm Hela, Magik, and Gargantos, plus Darkchild, Magik’s demonic alter ego. Key art also takes in “darker” characters like Blade and Moon Knight, with Agatha Harkness among the names coverage floats as unconfirmed. The trailer promises “gods and monsters, vampires, and werewolves, demons, and warlocks” coming together “in a massive battle called Darkhold Destiny.”

The set leans into Magic’s fantasy aesthetic: “We were allowed to take our unique look at magical worlds and folklore and lay that into Marvel to bring them a new vision of the characters that people already love… Marvel let our artists run wild.”

The First Card Reveals

MTG Darkhold Destiny (1)

The reveal stream at New York Comic Con and the official X posts from Wizards of the Coast debut Darkhold Destiny’s first cards, led by a new mechanic. Hela, Mistress of Darkness, a 6/6 God Sorcerer Villain, introduces Vengeance, a twist on Adventure where spells attach to creatures and can only be cast once the creature is in the graveyard.

Her Vengeance spell, Dark Tutor, reads “Search your library for a card, put it into your hand or graveyard, then shuffle. You lose 3 life” and carries the reminder text “Cast only from your graveyard. Then exile it.” MTGRocks calls it a strictly-better Grim Tutor and a strong addition to Standard and Commander. Hela also creates that many tapped 2/2 black Zombie tokens whenever a player loses life during your turn, once per turn.

MTG Darkhold Destiny (9)

The Darkhold gets its full rules text: tap it to put a sin counter on it, draw a card for each sin counter, then lose 1 life for each card in your hand. A second ability, activate only as a sorcery, makes each player’s life total become the lowest among all players. MTGRocks likens it to a pricier Repay in Kind. The mythic Legendary Artifact with the Book type is the set’s draw engine, and MTGRocks calls it a Commander win condition when paired with life-payment outlets or Platinum Angel. Its flavor text reads: “The first words scrawled against its pages birthed the concept of evil into the universe.”

Magik, Illyana Rasputin transforms into Darkchild, Demon Uncaged on a double-faced card. The front is a 3/3 that impulse-draws a card each upkeep; the back is a 4/4 Mutant Demon Sorcerer, cast for five mana, that exiles cards from the top of your library until it hits a nonland card and lets you play them, and can gain indestructible until end of turn by paying 4 life and tapping it. Rather than paying to transform, Magik may flip at the beginning of your end step if you sacrificed two or more permanents that turn. MTGRocks notes the condition is easy to meet in sacrifice-heavy decks but a real cost elsewhere.

MTG Darkhold Destiny (6)

Gargantos, the Endbringer is a rare Legendary Creature with deathtouch that enters with three +1/+1 counters, doubles them each upkeep, and deals that much damage to each other opponent whenever it hits one. Its featured art is labeled a Scene card in the official announcement, pointing to the set’s Scene Boxes, and MTGRocks calls it the strongest potential Commander of the reveal.

The support cards round out the first Darkhold Destiny look. Hela’s Arcanum is an Arcane instant with three modes: a temporary buff with deathtouch, a self-return effect, and destroying each non-Zombie creature with power 3 or less. Penance Stare is a one-mana white removal spell that destroys an attacking creature with mana value 3 or less, Rise from the Nether is a seven-mana Arcane spell that makes 3/1 tokens, and Temple of Khonshu is a common Orzhov dual land that enters untapped if you control a Dimension, hinting at a new card subtype.
