Wizards of the Coast Expands Dungeons & Dragons with World of Warcraft and Star Wars Crossovers

Wizards of the Coast is taking its crossover strategy beyond Magic: The Gathering and bringing it into Dungeons & Dragons with new tie-ins to World of Warcraft and Star Wars. The announcements, made during the company’s Gen Con 2026 keynote, signal a major shift for D&D as it leans into the same kind of franchise-driven model that has fueled Magic’s recent growth. The move follows the huge commercial success of Universes Beyond in Magic, which helped push the game to $1.72 billion in annual revenue in fiscal year 2025.

New Direction for D&D

The first major release in this new wave will be Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, a 256-page book set to launch on Nov. 17. The book draws from more than 20 years of World of Warcraft history and includes material from the 2026 expansion, Midnight. It introduces 11 new species, including Pandaren and Draenei, along with new elven lineages and a broad collection of lore drawn from the MMORPG’s world.

Players will also get six new subclasses and three updated versions for the D&D 5.5e ruleset, allowing them to build characters inspired by Death Knights, Demon Hunters, Shadow Priests, and other Warcraft classes. The book adds more than 60 new spells, giving players a wide range of options for customizing their characters and campaigns.

Design and Content

Principal game designer James Wyatt said the goal was to present every World of Warcraft class and specialization in a way that could be built using either the Player’s Handbook or new rules from the book. The design approach blends familiar D&D systems with fresh mechanics tied to the Warcraft setting.

The book explores recognizable locations such as Orgrimmar and Icecrown Citadel, and includes stat blocks for well-known figures like Jaina Proudmoore and Arthas Menethil. Hasbro is also releasing miniatures, including Arthas and Illidan Stormrage, while an Icecrown Citadel map pack will include a digital adventure for a five-person party from level 16 to 20.

Gameplay Additions

Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft will feature seven dungeons, 30 bosses, and more than 50 new monsters. It also adds new systems such as professions and renown rewards for 23 factions. For players interested in treasure and progression, the book includes 26 new magic items, including artifacts, as well as rules for mounts and companion creatures.

The book is more than a simple setting conversion. It appears designed to bring together lore, character options, and adventure content in a single package that captures the scale of World of Warcraft while fitting within D&D’s rules framework.

What Comes Next

The World of Warcraft release will anchor the Season of Champions in Dungeons & Dragons’ new seasonal model. A Star Wars roleplaying product is scheduled for summer 2027 under the Season of Rebellion, and it will serve as a replacement for Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars Roleplaying Game, which ended in 2020.

At the same time, Wizards is also opening the door for other publishers to work on parts of D&D’s classic settings. Greg Bilsland said the company wants players to return to settings like Eberron, Ravenloft, and Dark Sun more often, while acknowledging that the internal team is too small to support every world with enough adventure content. That creates room for outside partners to contribute more regularly.

Among those partners are Kobold Press for the Forgotten Realms, Ghostfire Gaming for Ravenloft, and Visionary Production & Design for Eberron. Wizards says it wants to balance these collaborations with its own original settings and with new crossover material, using lessons learned from Magic’s own Universes Beyond strategy.
